Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

  • The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a standardized international test designed to evaluate a candidate’s Japanese Language knowledge on the basis of reading, language understanding, vocabulary, grammar and listening.

  • JLPT has a long history since its first inception in 1984. In 2017, there were over 10,00,000 (1 Million) applicants around the globe, making JLPT the largest-scale Japanese-language test in the world.

  • It is administered by The Japan Foundation (A Japanese government body).

  • Like IELTS, TOEFL, etc. for English language, the scores in JLPT are recognized worldwide. The JLPT is held to evaluate and certify proficiency of non-native speakers in Japanese language.

  • It contains 5(Five) evaluation levels viz. N1, N2, N3, N4, N5.

  • They are arranged in decreasing order of complexity. Meaning, N1 is the hardest and N5 is the easiest.

  • JLPT is held twice a year throughout the world on the same days: First Sunday of July and First Sunday of December.

  • In India, JLPT is conducted at six centres viz. Pune, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore.

What is NAT Test ?

Japanese Language NAT Test

  • The Japanese Language NAT-TEST is an examination that measures the Japanese language ability of students who are not native Japanese speakers. The tests are separated by difficulty (five levels) and general ability is measured in three categories: Grammar/Vocabulary, Listening and Reading Comprehension. The format of the exam and the types of questions are equivalent to those that appear on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

  • It is administered by Senmon Kyouiku Publishing Co. (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan).

  • There are five levels of the Japanese Language NAT-TEST. Level 5 is the easiest followed by levels 4, 3, 2, and then level 1, which is the most difficult.

  • Major benefits of NAT test are-

    • The difficulty of each level of NAT test corresponds to its respective level (from N5 to N1) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). So, it also an excellent way to prepare for JLPT.

    • The results of NAT test are declared within just three weeks of the examination date.

    • While the JLPT is conducted twice a year, NAT test is conducted SIX times in a year.
